Fed: Downer welcomes Korean breakthrough

CANBERRA, Feb 14 AAP - Foreign Minister Alexander Downer says North Korea's promise
to shut down its Yongbyon nuclear reactor and to allow inspectors back into the country
is a significant opportunity.

In return for the move, North Korea will receive 50,000 tonnes of oil or economic aid
of equal value.

"The statement marks a significant opportunity for North Korea to meet its Joint Statement
commitments by comprehensively and irreversibly dismantling its nuclear programs, and
resolve what constitutes a grave threat to North East Asian security," Mr Downer said
in a statement.
