WA:WA bushfire near Bunbury contained
PERTH, Dec 4 AAP - WA Firefighters have succeeded in containing a bushfire threatening
properties near Bunbury in the state's southwest.
Residents of Gelorup in the Shire of Capel had been warned to abandon or be prepared
to actively defend their homes on Sunday morning (WST).
But early in the afternoon the message was downgraded to a bushfire advice notice.
WA's Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) cautioned in a statement that although
the fire was contained, it was not under control and residents needed to stay alert for
changing conditions.
Around 40 career and volunteer firefighters were at the scene.
Meanwhile, a fire that threatened residents of Molloy Island and East Augusta in the
state's south-west has been contained and is no longer expected to pose a threat.
Bushfire advice notices were issued on Sunday for a number of other fires across WA
that were not immediate threats to lives or property.
A total fire ban was in place on Sunday for Perth, the Perth hills and surrounding
shires, as well as Mandurah.

NSW: Premier blames union for bus strike
SYDNEY, Dec 19 AAP - NSW Premier Kristina Keneally has kicked off her 41st birthday
celebrations by again defending the actions of the government over a bus driver strike
that gripped Sydney and Newcastle.
The mother-of-two, in office for just over two weeks, on Saturday lambasted unions
for refusing to negotiate in the lead-up to Friday's 24-hour driver strike which left
an estimated 600,000 commuters without their usual form of transport.
Drivers stopped work as part of their campaign to secure a pay increase without the
loss of conditions.
Late on Friday, the Industrial Relations Commission (IRC) ordered drivers back to work
in a decision welcomed by Ms Keneally, who said unions could have avoided the strike.
"The government worked all throughout Thursday to avert that bus strike," Ms Keneally
told reporters on Saturday in Sydney.
"The government put on the table a very fair and a very generous offer - six per cent
over two years. In these tough economic times ... a six per cent pay rise over two years
was a very fair and a very generous offer.
"Now the union, on Thursday, asked us to put the offer on the table. We did. They asked
me to publicly confirm that. I did. And yet the union executive still decided to go to
a snap strike without putting that offer to their members," she said.
"I think that decision let down the public, it let down their membership."
Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott on Friday said there has been a 150 per cent
increase in the number of strikes since the government came to power in 2007.
But, Ms Keneally skirted the issue when asked about speculated state and federal government
failure to stand up against unions.
"The government ... was at the IRC at nine o'clock on Thursday night. Unions NSW was
there at nine o'clock on Thursday night. It's the union - the Rail, Train and Bus Union
- that wasn't answering their phone and didn't turn up on Thursday night," she said.
Bus drivers returned to work on Saturday, with negotiations over conditions expected
to continue in the IRC.
IRC president, Justice Roger Boland recommended both parties continue to negotiate
the outstanding issues of the enterprise bargaining agreement, which expired in July.
Rail Tram and Bus Union (RBTU) spokesman Raul Baonza said he would take the wage offer
to the union executive on Monday and put it to the members during the first week of January.
The union and the State Transit Authority (STA) are due back in the IRC on January
13 to report their progress and must complete negotiations by February 26 or possibly
face binding arbitration.
When asked by reporters how she planned to celebrate her birthday, the premier said
she had an official engagement in her electorate before heading this evening to the annual
Carols in the Domain concert.
She also received a bouquet of native flowers from her parents in the United States, she said.

Vic: Police hunt man over three armed robberies
MELBOURNE, Aug 11 AAP - Police are hunting a man believed to be responsible for three
armed robberies in Melbourne's northern and inner suburbs overnight.
The first incident occurred just after 7pm (AEST) at a fast food outlet on Barry Rd,
Campbellfield.
It was reported a man produced what appeared to be a firearm and threatened the store
attendant, who handed over cash from the till.
The man then fled on foot east along Sydney Road towards the Hume Highway.
The second incident occurred about 7.20pm at a service station on Sydney Rd in Fawkner
where police believe the same man threatened a store attendant with a firearm and demanded
money.
He then fled on foot south along Sydney Road towards Lynch Road with cash.
The third alleged armed robbery occurred about 10pm at a fast food restaurant in Swanston
Street, Carlton.
The man entered the store, approached staff at the counter and used the firearm to
threaten staff before fleeing on foot towards Grattan Street with cash.
He is described as European, aged in his mid-30s, about 163cm tall with a solid build
and a chubby face.
During the robberies the man is believed to have been wearing a black and white baseball
cap and a long dark jacket.

Qld: Minister defends hospital performance
By Gabrielle Dunlevy and Tony Bartlett
BRISBANE, Feb 16 AAP - Queensland Health Minister Stephen Robertson says he's happy
to campaign on Labor's health record, despite it falling short in some areas.
The government on Monday released its public hospitals performance report for the December
2008 quarter, which showed a growing number of people being treated in the state's hospitals.
The report came as speculation mounted of an election next month, six months earlier
than its due date.
It showed large increases in emergency department attendances and improvements in patient
numbers treated across the state compared to the same quarter last year.
But emergency departments continued to fall short on four out of five national targets
on how soon patients should be treated.
On elective surgery waiting times, the report showed a 34.3 per cent drop in the number
of category one, or urgent cases, waiting longer than recommended, since last year.
However, the number of category two cases waiting longer than recommended increased
4.7 per cent, to 3,401 patients.
They were mainly orthopaedic and general surgery patients.
Shadow Health Minister Mark McArdle says it's appalling that despite spending more
than $20 billion over three years there's little evidence of any real improvement in hospital
services.
"I'm very concerned there are well over 7,000 people in this state who have had to
wait longer for surgery than recommended," he said.
"I'm equally concerned that we don't know the number of the tens of thousands who are
on the unofficial waiting list - to get onto the waiting list.
"Now I know that in 2007 there were 143,000 patients waiting for a new case appointment.
"How many of those are still waiting, and has that number grown," said Mr McArdle.
Mr Robertson said he was pleased with the progress of extra spending on health, but
denied the system was in crisis.
"When you look at the facts, I think we have a strong story to tell," he told reporters
in Brisbane.
"If I was presenting to you figures that showed despite the additional funding that
has been injected into our health system, that we were going backwards, then I think people
would rightfully be critical of us.
"The simple fact is, we're able to demonstrate quite an increasingly strong story about
how we're dealing with pressures across our system, responding with more clinical staff,
more doctors, more hospital beds and therefore more operations."

Fed: Haneef court decision due Friday
BRISBANE, Dec 19 AAP - Former terror suspect Mohamed Haneef will learn on Friday whether
he has won his latest legal battle to return to work in Australia.
In August, a Federal Court Judge overturned then Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews'
decision to cancel the Indian doctor's 457 work visa on character grounds because of his
association with alleged UK terror suspects Sabeel and Kafeel Ahmed.
However, lawyers for the Immigration Minister appealed the decision before the full
bench of the Federal Court in Brisbane in November and the three-member panel of judges
reserved their decision.
A Federal court spokesman said Chief Justice Michael Black would hand down his decision
at 2.30pm (AEDT) at the Commonwealth Law Courts Building on Friday.
Dr Haneef was arrested at the Brisbane International Airport in July, shortly after
the failed UK terror plot and was held in custody for 12 days before being charged with
supporting terrorism.
The charges were dropped less than two weeks later after Commonwealth Director of Public
Prosecutions announced there was no reasonable prospect of a conviction.

PAC: Solomons opposition files motion to sack new PM
By Karen Michelmore
HONIARA, April 21 AAP - The newly formed Solomon Islands opposition party has filed
a motion to sack Prime Minister Snyder Rini.
The Solomon Islands parliament will sit for the first time on Monday after violent
mobs rampaged through the capital Honiara following the election of Mr Rini to the top
post by MPs.
Patterson Oti, from the newly formed opposition party, says two of the MPs who voted
for Mr Rini have now joined opposition ranks, and he is hopeful the no-confidence motion
will be successful when it is put to parliament, possibly on Wednesday or Thursday.
"We've filed a motion on Wednesday, a motion of no confidence in the prime minister,"
Mr Oti told AAP.
"We've filed it with the speaker of parliament.
"In the circumstances where the people are calling for the prime minister to resign
because of the non-acceptance of the outcome of the elections on Tuesday, the only avenue
constitutionally which we can use in supporting the view ... is through a vote of no confidence
in the prime minister and his government on the floor of parliament."
Mr Oti, the MP for Temotu Nede, was hopeful the resumption of parliament next week
- and the no-confidence motion - would bring calm to the violence-stricken city of Honiara.
"It's an avenue whereby you can diffuse the unruly behaviour of the public," he said.
"(You can) give some form of conciliation to the public, at least the due process of
democracy does still take place ... through the appropriate channels which (are) the constitution
and the parliamentary mechanisms that we currently operate under."
The opposition party - made up of several parties including the National Party, the
Solomon Islands Party for Rural Advancement (SIPRA), Lafari Party, the Solomon Islands
Democratic Party and independent MPs - was meeting this morning at a Honiara hotel to
decide their position on a new speaker to be elected by parliament on Monday.
Mr Oti said the opposition coalition now held 25 of the 50 votes, and were lobbying
others to join their ranks.
They need just one more vote to pass their no-confidence motion, after MPs Patrick
Vahoe and Trevor Olavae switched sides following the mayhem in Honiara, he said.
"We have two MPs who voted for the prime minister who have now changed position and
have joined ranks with what is now the opposition in parliament," Mr Oti said.
"Basically it is now 25-25 and we hope that the members of parliament ... will make
it their business to seriously consider their position in order to diffuse any further
escalation of the protests.
"They have to take sides with the current opposition to bring the government down."
Mr Oti said the "whole uprising would come to a stop" if the no-confidence motion was passed.
He said the violence was sad, uncalled for and "most of all unexpected".
"But I think the Solomon Islands has come to a stage where the general public has recognised
what has been going on over the years in terms of formation of governments," Mr Oti said.
"They have watched this process ... and I think come to a stage when in the last four
years it was so obvious that they could no longer accept.
"This regime is being put in place by interests which do not necessarily represent
the wider public interest."

self-help
1. Action taken by a person to whom a wrong has been done to protect his rights without recourse to the courts. Self-help is permitted in certain torts, such as trespass and nuisance. A trespasser may be evicted provided only reasonable force is used. A nuisance may be abated (see abatement). See also recaption.
2. Independent and self-directed action taken by an injured state against the transgressing state in order to gain redress. Until the middle of the 20th century the right of self-help was claimed by states as one of the essential attributes of sovereignty. In the absence of an international executive agency, an injured state undertook on its own account the defence of the claim it was making. Forcible measures falling short of war might prove sufficient; failing these, war might be resorted to as the ultimate means of self-help. Since self-help was regarded at international law as a legal remedy, the results secured by it were recognized by the international community as a final settlement of the case. Since the establishment of the United Nations, self-help with regard to use of force can only be legal in so far as it forms part of a legitimate claim to self-defence. The remaining forms of self-help are countermeasures, such as retorsion and reprisals.
ASI Launches In-Flight Email From $1.00.
Business Editors
IPEC Conference
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 4, 2003
ASI Entertainment, Inc (OTCBB:ASIQ) will launch a revolutionary pricing model for in-flight passenger email at the international airline Inflight Passenger Entertainment and Communications (IPEC) conference in London next week.
Based on ASI's unique software system "Data3mail", airlines will be able to offer access to in-flight email for as little as $1.00.
Ron Chapman, ASI's CEO, believes that "email should be based on pricing similar to Internet cafes. Our research indicates that the majority of travellers are used to paying between $3.00 - $5.00 to send or receive email using the global webmail network." Data3mail offers a comparable service using ASI's proprietary software format, which greatly reduces file sizes to compensate for the higher satellite transmission costs.
Unlike all other systems, there will be "no connection fee" and for only $1.00 passengers can check their inboxes while flying anywhere in the world. ASI believes this is a very important feature for the business traveller who during a long flight may only want to check to see if an important email has arrived. For a few dollars more, they can select the exact emails they wish to upload and by using the Data3mail Spam filter, make sure they only pay for the emails they want. Pricing to send emails will start from $3.50.
Data3mail's proprietary software leverages off the aircraft's existing communications system and the aviation certified Inmarsat and SITA Global networks. The end result is lower costs and cheaper prices making it affordable for everyone. To date, most other systems have been developed using the Internet protocol TCP/IP connected via the expensive aircraft telephone line, or involve leasing commercial satellites, which is costly, complicated and overhead intensive. As Data3mail is based on using the existing email accounts, no special connection or computer expertise is required to be connected.
Over 2000 aircraft have the Global Data3 capability providing an existing market for the Data3mail system. Data3mail is undergoing flight test programs with 2 major international airlines and is expected to gain considerable attention at the IPEC conference being held in London between 7 to 9 April 2003.

Star Computer Group first developed PMS for Windows in Unify's ACCELL, and they have redeveloped the product using Unify VISION. The new product benefits that appealed to Grant Thornton UK were the ease of use and functionality. PMS for Windows continues to be the leading product for practice management for the chartered accountancy profession in the UK. Forty-three of the top 100 UK accountancy firms use Star software for practice management.

Web poses insidious dangers.

The advent of the internet has introduced many social, cultural, and economic benefits never before experienced, but, says an internet security expert, it also poses several causes for concern.
During the first leg of the Pan Middle East Security tour, David Perry, global director of education at Trend Micro, stated that the growing global internet population means that the web will increase significantly as a threat vehicle.
A"Human behaviour is the greatest contributor to the evolution of internet threats as well as criminals' know-how to exploit this opportunity,A" said Perry.
A"Ignorance, arrogance, curiosity, lack of awareness and just plain human nature can lead internet users to put themselves at risk. At best they might realise the issue, but by then the damage is done,A" added Perry.

Home Security Store and Visonic Partner to Offer the Exclusive PowerMax Design Wireless Alarm System.
Riverside, CA (PRWEB) July 14, 2011
As consumers become more cost-conscious, Home Security Store is offering the best home security solution with maximum features at an affordable price in its new exclusive Visonic PowerMax Design Wireless Alarm System, says Home Security Store Vice-President Ralph Winn.
"The PowerMax Design was developed by Visonic and Home Security Store specifically to meet this growing market need. By leveraging its extensive experience in the field of professional security systems, Visonic created a self-contained panel that provides the ideal balance between affordability and performance" said Winn.
This small new panel -- unique among its size class -- has a standard built-in PSTN communicator and offers the flexibility to add an internal, field-upgradeable GSM / GPRS communication module, says Winn.
Winn adds that the solution can be extended further with a wide range of accessories and expansion options. The panel supports 28 wireless zones and 1 hardwired.
"This means that no matter how large your space is, you can integrate various motion, flood and smoke detectors, window and door contacts, sirens, additional keypads, and more," said Winn
Plus, according to Winn, what really makes this system unique is that it features 8 different colored skins, which the user can apply on the control panel to highlight the keypad. These vibrant colored choices include brown, baby blue, canary, ivory, slate, gun metal, silver and evergreen. "This means you can match your alarm kit to virtually any style, and color decor within your home."
Visonic President Mark Ingram says that Visonic worked closely with the Home Security Store team to develop a security kit that goes far beyond the term user friendly, "With esthetics in mind Ralph Winn wanted a kit that was not only technically simplistic, but would also meet the demands of an informed DIY consumer."
According to Visonic, the Design can be installed and programmed in less than two hours -- that's half the time of traditional security panels.
"Since the system comes out of the box ready to go and the devices are labeled with where they are installed, it truly is almost 100% pre-programmed. The end user adds some information dedicated to the residence and it is done," said Ingram.
Winn adds that the wireless Design security system can report burglar alarms, fire alarms, and panic alarms via the telephone or Internet messaging to you, or can be professionally monitored by any alarm monitoring company. "Plus, with the PLINK2 board Internet module connected to your home network, the system can be controlled by a web browser from anywhere in the world through internet connection, including mobile phones like the iPhone, Blackberry or Android OS," said Winn.
The Design is also capable of home control and surveillance. "By connecting it to the PowerLink add-on and PowerLink cameras you can have those cameras monitor in and around your property," concluded Winn.
"We work closely with the Home Security Store as a valued partner. Home Security Store wanted something to support their clients with a system that has a unique feature set and design. As we all know, there is a segment of consumers that are much more tech savvy than ever and these are the clients that the Home Security Store caters to," said Ingram.

Friendfinder Networks Inc. To Release 2011 First Quarter Financial Results On Monday, June 6, 2011.(Financial report)
This is just the BEGINNING; Lennon sees title dream die amid doubts over future but defiant Celtic boss insists...(Sport)
Byline: by STEPHEN McGOWAN
WHEN the sense of loss and distress had abated, the uplifting sounds of optimism and defiance rose high into the skies over Glasgow's east end.
Three years to the day since the death of the late Tommy Burns robbed them of a managerial icon, Celtic supporters have found their new talisman.
'For me, this isn't the end,' said Neil Lennon on the pitch at the final whistle, 'it's just the beginning'.
Like disciples hailing the new messiah, a large crowd bought into every word. Whatever the errors of the recent weeks, whatever the slipups and inexplicable catastrophes, these people have come to worship the ground their under-fire manager walks on.
Reminiscent of a political rally, the strains of Labi Siffre's 1980s anti-apartheid anthem Something So Strong replaced the more traditional sound of Glenn Daly's Celtic Song pre-match. The manifesto and message was crystal clear.
Whatever bombs and accusations may fly at their manager, whatever the bigots and racists try, they remain four-square behind their under-siege manager.
In a very real sense, the recent attacks and troubles served here as a human shield against the onset of failure. As Lennon himself put it, heaven only knows how they will respond if they actually win something.
All of this adds to the growing impression that, even if Celtic fail to overcome Motherwell next weekend, Lennon has become unsackable. Like the leader of a cause rather than a football club, he has come to embody the image Parkhead supporters have of themselves as an oppressed minority under fire from all sides.
'I thought about walking away once or twice,' he admitted afterwards in response to the burning question of the day. 'But then I think: ''Why?''
'Being a manager wherever you are is a very precious job. That's because you don't have a long lifespan.
'We are in the game because we love it. All managers are in the game because we love it and think we can make a difference.
'We think we can bring success or improvement or progression to whatever club we are at. I want to do that here.
'We were only a point away. Without three draws at home in December we would have won it, but it's all ifs and buts and maybes. It's not a day for dwelling on things.
'We have to use how we are feeling today as a real motivation for next week and take that into the season after.'
For Celtic and their fans, motivation is the last commodity they lack. In the hours before another Helicopter Sunday, Glasgow was abuzz with suggestions that a Sunday paper was about to run a damaging expose on the Celtic manager.
Like so many of the vicious, despicable internet rumours borne of sheer mischief, it proved to be nonsense. This has been a season when Lennon has been subject to almost comical attempts to trip him up at every turn, the impression growing that some will stop at nothing.
It was imperative to Celtic supporters yesterday that they showed their support any way they possibly could. Not least given the appalling scenes last midweek which followed a touchline assault in Edinburgh during the defeat of Hearts.
'I'm not happy about that,' he admitted, 'that my personal safety was under threat.
'Obviously that is not an issue for myself or our club to deal with. That's for other authorities to sort out. I'm here and I'm a manager, whether we talk about football or my views on that.
'I'm not there to hurt people, just to build a team. I give answers to questions and some people take them the wrong way.'
In his on-field speech, the Celtic manager summed up by telling supporters that many -- including the media -- had to take a cold, hard look at themselves in the mirror after a bitter, poisonous season few will be sad to see the back of.
In response, plenty continue to suggest that Lennon should be first to indulge in a bout of self-analysis. 'He brings it on himself,' remains a stubbornly common reaction to acts of deranged criminality.
Asked for his reaction to that, Lennon said: 'Astonished is one word. But that tells me a lot about those people saying those things in the first place.
'It tells me what their mindset is like and what their views are. It's not a slight on me -- it's a slight on them.
'Today was a show to the rest of Scotland. We have a magnificent support and I know football is a fickle game at times. Maybe some of the stuff that has happened to me has brought a show from some of our supporters.
'But I don't want it to be like that. I want them to come see me and the team for the football we produce week in and week out.
'I want us to be a team that Celtic fans all over the world can be proud of.' It would be damaging and self-defeating if Celtic and their supporters were to use the off-field atrocities to excuse their title failure.
The Parkhead side had an alarming tendency to blow up at key moments, most notably in home draws with Inverness Caley Thistle and Dundee United and away defeats to Motherwell and the Highlanders.
They kept their side of the bargain yesterday, but knew within 10 minutes of kick-off that the game was up.
Thereafter, Celtic Park might have settled into a morose torpor and gone quiet. Instead, however, Lennon's vow to bring the thunder back sprang to mind as fans spent the bulk of the second half in celebratory mode.
To that end, Lennon has achieved some of his goals, but not all. Winning the Scottish Cup would be some payback to those prepared to overlook an inexplicable loss of the title.
'I have certainly brought the thunder back,' he conceded. 'But I also wanted to bring the championship back and I haven't done that.
'So I failed in that objective. But, in terms of bringing back the noise, the passion from the fans, the players did that in abundance.
'The supporters are what make the club special. There has been a great united front between the staff here and the support.
'I don't think the club has been as united since Martin's days, really. We are very proud of that, obviously, but we feel a bit deflated that we couldn't win the championship.'

Alternative Healthcare 2010 - Market Assessment.
M2 PRESSWIRE-December 6, 2010-Bharat Book Bureau: Alternative Healthcare 2010 - Market Assessment(C)1994-2010 M2 COMMUNICATIONS
RDATE:06122010
Like previous editions of this Market Assessment, Key Note's 2010 report on alternative healthcare - also known as complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) - concentrates on major therapies such as acupuncture, the Alexander Technique, aromatherapy, chiropractic, herbal medicine, homeopathy, osteopathy and reflexology, and also covers herbal and homeopathic remedies and aromatherapy oils. There are, however, a large number of other alternative healthcare techniques not covered by this report. Some of these resemble the aforementioned therapies, although others relate more to exercise, spiritual welfare or personal fulfilment.
Many alternative therapies and remedies, particularly acupuncture and herbal medicine, have been in existence for centuries and have formed the basis for modern 'conventional' medicine. A point of difference, however, is that some are regarded as 'holistic'; that is, they treat the whole person rather than targeting specific symptoms and their causes, as is the case with conventional medicine. Although herbal remedies are widely perceived as 'natural' in terms of their sources, Key Note's research shows that many consumers recognise the need to treat them with similar caution as conventional medicines.
Despite the fact that medical specialists, general practitioners (GPs), nurses and other health professionals sometimes practise alternative therapies themselves, or refer patients to alternative practitioners, a low proportion of respondents to Key Note's survey felt that the medical profession supported, recommended or had enough knowledge about alternative healthcare. Furthermore, although the NHS has for many years offered selected alternative therapies to patients (particularly homeopathy), the availability of these has declined due to the NHS questioning the lack of 'evidence-based proof of efficacy'. In January 2008, it was reported that many NHS trusts had withdrawn or reduced funding for homeopathy during the previous 2 years.
Since the House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology's report on CAM was published in 2000, there has been slow but ongoing activity regarding statutory or voluntary self-regulation of alternative healthcare therapists in the UK. Currently, only chiropractors and osteopaths are fully regulated, although discussions continue regarding self-regulation in acupuncture, herbal medicine, homeopathy, aromatherapy, the Alexander Technique and reflexology. Indeed, the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) Register is already open to some of these disciplines, with more to be included in the future. Key Note's research shows that people would be better disposed towards the use of acupuncture and herbal medicine if these areas were regulated for safety and effectiveness.
A major issue in CAM remains the effect across Europe of the EU Directive on Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products. This addresses the questions of quality, safety and efficacy of herbal remedies, which are growing concerns owing to the increasing number of products on the market - a few of which have been shown to present distinct health risks. In order to continue to be offered for sale after end April 2011, all herbal remedies that have been on the market for 30 years (prior to 2004) must hold a Traditional Herbal Registration (THR). However, they will be exempted if they hold a Product Licence (PL) or Market Authorisation (MA), are classified as a botanical product under food law, are available only from herbal practitioners or are making no medicinal claims. Products that have been on the market for less than 30 years prior to 2004 must comply with one of these last conditions.
Despite regulatory challenges, some manufacturers, such as Diomed and New Nordic, have been offering new herbal products. In addition, there is some consolidation among UK manufacturers and suppliers, coupled with increasing activity to improve UK market shares by Swiss- and German-owned companies such as Galenica, Bioforce, Klosterfrau and Schwabe. Some of these have become the major holders of THRs in the UK with their branded products.
It is thought that the Internet is gradually becoming a more important source of supply of herbal and homeopathic remedies, and for aromatherapy oils. However, the major distribution channels remain chemists and drugstores, health-food shops, grocery multiples and, in the case of aromatherapy, cosmetics and toiletries specialists.
Main media advertising expenditure on herbal, homeopathic and aromatherapy products remains at a relatively low level. With regard to retail sales values, there has been an estimated fall in sales of herbal remedies in recent years, as well as a slight decline in the case of homeopathic remedies in 2009. However, the aromatherapy oils sector grew steadily up to 2009. Key Note forecasts that sales of herbal remedies will decline in 2010 and 2011, before staging a recovery between 2012 and 2014. Sales of homeopathic remedies are also expected to dip in 2010 and 2011; despite a slight increase in 2012, they are predicted to remain static thereafter. Meanwhile, sales of aromatherapy oils are expected to grow slowly throughout the period from 2010 to 2014.

New computer science study findings have been reported by scientists at Lehigh University.(Report)
According to recent research from the United States, "Disruption Tolerant Networks (DTNs) technologies are emerging solutions to networks that experience frequent partitions. As a result, multicast design in DTNs is a considerably more difficult problem compared to that in Internet and mobile ad hoc networks."
"In this paper, we first investigate three basic DTN multicast strategies, including unicast-based multicast (U-Multicast), static-tree-based multicast (ST-Multicast) and dynamic-tree-based multicast (DT-Multicast) strategies. Then we focus on studying two DT-Multicast routing schemes: Dynamic Tree Based Routing (DTBR) and On-demand Situation-aware Multicast (OS-Multicast), which address the challenges of utilizing opportunistic links to conduct dynamic multicast structures in DTNs. Performances of different strategies are then evaluated by simulations, including applying the real-world DTN traces. Our results show that OS-Multicast and DTBR can achieve higher message delivery ratio than that of using U-Multicast and ST-Multicast strategies," wrote Q. Ye and colleagues, Lehigh University.
The researchers concluded: "Also, to get better performance, we recommend that system designers select OS-Multicast when the source traffic rate is low. ."
Ye and colleagues published their study in Computer Communications (Performance comparison of different multicast routing strategies in disruption tolerant networks. Computer Communications, 2009;32(16 Sp. Iss):1731-1741).

Spherix Stockholders Authorize Potential Reverse Stock Split.
Spherix Incorporated (NASDAQ:SPEX) reported that at a special meeting of stockholders held on November 17, 2008, the stockholders authorized the Board of Directors to effect a reverse split of its common stock at any time within the next twelve (12) months at a ratio ranging from 1:5 to 1:20. The Board of Directors will be assessing the appropriateness and size of a reverse split. If a reverse split is approved by the Board of Directors, the result would be that a specific number of shares of common stock between five (5) and twenty (20) would be combined into one (1) share of common stock (see also Spherix Incorporated).
As a result of Nasdaq's recent suspension of enforcement of its minimum price requirement, the Company has until April 23, 2009 to achieve compliance with the $1.00 per share minimum price request. Accordingly, it is expected that the Board of Directors will defer action on the reverse stock split until early 2009.
"We are pleased with the support of our stockholders in authorizing the Board to affect a reverse split, and the confidence that it represents in Spherix going forward," said Claire Kruger, Spherix's CEO.
Spherix also reported that it has now received the final $2 million escrow payment related to the sale of its InfoSpherix subsidiary last year.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS : LUXEMBOURG'S REMEDIES FOR BROADBAND MARKET ARE ACCEPTED.
While making certain suggestions, the European Commission agreed in a letter published on 3 November to a measure proposed by Luxembourg giving new market entrants access to the broadband networks developed by EPT (Entreprise des postes et telecommunications), the historic operator.
At the end of September, the telecom regulator Institut luxembourgeois de regulation (ILR) had notified its remedies for the monopoly exercised by the historic operator on this market. It was obliged to do so under the Telecoms Regulation (Article 7), in force since July 2003, requiring the national regulators to analyse their markets, forward the results to the Commission and propose remedies if competition problems exist.
Luxembourg's remedy will oblige EPT to open its broadband network to its competitors, enabling them to provide high-speed connections to end users. The Commission welcomes in particular the possibility for competitors to choose the connection technology for end users regardless of the technology used by EPT (ADSL2, ADSL2+ and VDSL). This provision will "give competitors the possibility to vary their products," explained a spokesman. Under the terms proposed by ILR, bitstream access will also need to be granted by EPT to a future VDSL (very high speed digital subscriber line).
The remedy only concerns wholesale access to networks in Internet Protocol (IP) mode, which is important for private end users because it allows suppliers to offer triple services, ie telephone, internet access and television.
The Commission's letter nonetheless asks the regulator to consider other remedies on the wholesale market if retail prices billed to consumers remain high. It mentions access to broadband in ATM mode, which would allow competitors to provide more varied services to businesses. The Commission adds that monthly fees in Luxembourg for services of 2 megabits per second (Mbps) range from 40 to 50, while elsewhere in Europe they typically range from 15 to 30 and sometimes include additional services such as television or telephony.
Another Commission request is that ILR ensure the development in the near future of stand-alone ADSL, ie broadband access that does not entail the obligation of subscribing to EPT's telephone services.
Luxembourg lags behind on implementation of telecommunications rules. It proposed this measure in the wake of a decision handed down by the EU Court of Justice early in 2005. The Commission notes all the same that its high-speed market is evolving favourably. With 17.6% broadband penetration (subscriptions per inhabitant), the country is above the European average of 14.86%.

"A high standard of accommodation" is the equivalent of "good sense of humour". Everybody claims they have it but many people are kidding themselves or plain fibbing.
Last year, my family and I chose a dream chateau in the South of France. Our rooms turned out to be in the tatty modern wing. And, funnily enough, the website hadn't mentioned the sweet smell of something sewagey that hung around the place.
So this year, I was a little wary - especially as we'd decided to go inland to the Charente region of the French South-West. In the past, we always figured that however bad the accommodation, all is not lost so long as you're by the sea. But this year we wouldn't have that safety net. On my internet search, instead of typing in "beach" I put in "golf".
The problem is I have a four-and-a-half-year-old who believes he's Tiger Woods. And no, he didn't come out of the womb that way. It's taken five years of careful brainwashing by his dad Ben. But now little Alex has a drive of more than 60 yards, his own set of clubs and he was quite insistent he'd rather be near a golf course than a beach.
Golf got Daddy's vote too.
Seven-month-old Ava didn't really have a preference. She's just as happy eating grass as sand.
So the Internet brought me to the Manoir de Longeveau. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, it is a group of converted stone buildings, formerly a Cognac estate on the border of the Charente and the Dordogne. It also had its own nine-hole golf course and clubhouse.
I was concerned there'd be too many golfers by half, droning on about their boring old birdies. Still, the chateau looked stunning. It had three tennis courts, a swimming pool and kids' paddling pool. And - joy of joys - a professionally-run creche.
Not, you understand, that I was sold on the idea of leaving Ava in the creche, sending the boys off to play golf, and lounging by the pool with a good book.
The airports of Bergerac, Poitiers, Angouleme and La Rochelle are all within easy striking distance but we chose to fly from Gatwick to Bordeaux with BA and hired a car for the hour-and-a-half drive.
And from the moment we pulled in at Longeveau, we realised we'd found somewhere pretty special. The clubhouse was a spectacular ivy-clad building with a terrace. The golf course was beautifully maintained and the surrounding countryside was a lush patchwork of greens.
The buildings were charmingly converted. There were no dishwashers, music systems or TVs but plenty of beamed ceilings and stone floors.
And there was the most magnificent sense of freedom. Children played football or tennis in the old barn, swam in the pool and ordered their own lollies from the English owner.
Alex quickly made friends. And unlike the beach, we weren't paranoid about him going more than a few yards away.
Many of the families - mainly British and Irish - we met there had been to Longeveau before. One group was returning for the 11th year. I could see why. We felt we'd found a hidden oasis.
We visited the market at Chalais, stocked up on cheese, vegetables and wine. It meant we hardly had to leave Longeveau for the rest of the week.
My husband and Alex played golf. Ava just spent one morning in the creche. Most of all, she loved the pool. We all relaxed and just enjoyed being together.
We only ventured out a couple of times for meals in nearby Aubeterre- sur-Dronne, a charming village with a large British ex-pat community.
One night we had the slightly surreal experience of seeing EastEnders' Ricky Butcher carry a plate of steak and chips to a table. I might have worried I'd had too much sun and wine if we hadn't been told beforehand that Sid Owen owned the Fortuna restaurant. It shows the man has at least some taste.
It's a beautiful, tranquil corner of France. We'll definitely be going back.
